Icelandair Volcano Open 
The Volcano Open is a 2 day international golf tournament which is becoming more and more popular for foreigners to participate. The tournament starts Friday afternoon where players are offered a soup before teeing up and in the evening when everyone have played their round they are offered a midnight snack which includes puffins and flatbread.
On Saturday the tournament starts around noon and at the end of the tournament awards are handed out along with a special program which includes a one of a kind seafood buffet.
The Course
This par 70 (5,322 m. off the club tee's) championship course, set in an old volcano, is a wonderful test of golf. Teeing off against a backdrop of volcanic walls; changing wind directions on the same hole and playing across and over the sea are all features of golf in Westman Islands. The course has a reputation for having the best greens in the country and hosted the Icelandic Championship in July 1996.
This course is considered to be the best in Iceland and it is one of the 200 best courses in Europe, this golf course is a course that you can't let slip by, you just have to try this one, it is unbelivable and it will take your breath away.
Why is it called Volcano Open ?
On January 23, 1973 the islanders were rudely reminded of the incredible forces of Mother Nature. The night a volcano erupted on Heimaey and the inhabitants were forced to abandon their homes and flee to the mainland. The eruption lasted 5 months and when it finally grumbled to a halt, Heimaey had increased in size by 20% and the new mountain, Eldfell, had formed in the field of lava. A large part of the town including 360 homes had been covered by lava and ash. It took over two years to dig up the houses that could be saved and clean away the ash and lava. For a short time islanders used the heat from the still glowing lava to heat their homes. Surtsey, another volcano just of the shores of Heimaey, was formed by a sub oceanic eruption and is one of the youngest islands in the world, formed in 1963. It is a protected area and scientists have had the singular opportunity of studying the inhabitation of plants and animals.
Westman Islands are a true volcano world and that is why the tournament is called Volcano Open
